Dear All: I hope you are well. Here are updates from the NIH OITE, including 1) the schedule of webinars for next week (somewhat abbreviated because we have our virtual postbac poster day and it is our first experience with 900 posters in a virtual formal); 2) an invitation for trainees to participate in small group discussions focused on developing feedback resilience and assertiveness skills, and 3) an invitation for program leadership and faculty to attend small group discussions with OITE wellness experts to discuss supporting trainees. There is also a brief note at the bottom about a way for you to offer some resilience discussion groups on your campus.
Traditional Journal Publishing
Apr 24, 2020 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Traditional journal publishing: Instead of trying the spaghetti-sticking approach or impact factors, let’s talk about the best ways to identify a journal for your manuscript, and then how to navigate the submission process. We will look at several levels of journals and discuss pros/cons of each, along with the hidden importance of cover letters and how to appeal decisions you don’t agree with.

This workshop will highlight the critical elements and structure of CVs and resumes and cover letters. These important job documents serve as the foundation for all job searches, and knowing how to create them based on the employment sector and published position description is essential. Pre-/post-publication peer review: You do a study, you write up the paper, and then you publish it. That’s it, right? Not so fast: peer review has always been a recurring step in the scientific process, but methods to do so are even more widespread than ever. We will talk about benefits and challenges of using preprint sites like bioRxiv, and the wide world of peer-reviewed feedback after publishing your manuscript. Speaker, Dr. Chris Gunter
TRAINEE DISCUSSION GROUPS FOR BUILDING FEEDBACK RESILIENCE, ASSERTIVENESS SKILLS AND SELF-CONFIDENCE
Dear All: We have had requests from many of your trainees to host some small group discussions similar to the ones we offer for NIH trainees. We are going to try and do that next week and decided to focus the workshops around the theme of difficult conversations and feedback. We hope these discussions will help students and postdocs develop the ability to talk with their PIs about their needs now and in the long-term. I am sure that the conversation will touch on many other topics, including self-confidence, imposter fears, wellness and Covid-19 stress. Students will get the most out of the experience if they first watch the feedback resilience talk but this is not a requirement
To register to participate, students should:
- Pick a date/time and register for only one time slot; the registration links are below and all times are EST; registration will close 3 pm Friday May 24, 2020. If you find out afterward that you cannot attend, email Dr. Patty Wagner (Wagnerpa@nih.gov) so we can remove you from the list and help you find another session. If you sign up, please make the commitment to come as there are a limited number of slots available and we want to accommodate as many of you as possible.
- Agree to join the session and, if you have a camera on your computer, join and participate with your camera on. Part of the experience of the small group is the connection you will make with other students and postdocs and seeing each other really helps with building trust and communicating clearly. If you are worried about what folks might see in the background when you are on camera, use a virtual background. And if you do not have a camera, consider using your phone and the camera on your phone. We know that dogs bark, kids ask for help and cats disrupt meetings all the time so please do not worry about that!
- Watch the feedback resilience video (link above) and consider the prompt at the end of workshop in preparation for the session (actually writing about it is better, but thinking about it is good enough for us) and consider watching two other videos that are relevant to the topic.

FACULTY/UNIVERSITY LEADERSHIP DISCUSSIONS WITH OITE WELLNESS ADVISORS

We will be holding small group discussions for faculty and grad/postdoc program leaders to more deeply discuss this information and to ask specific questions of a mental health expert.
